A corner like no other
Plaza Paterna is a small square located at the entrance of Torrenueva Costa when arriving from Motril. It serves as a gathering and community space where different activities such as cultural and social events, take place throughout the year. The square is also a spot for rest and recreation, featuring numerous benches and landscaped areas that invite visitors to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings.
It is the area next to the Aljibe (the historic cistern), designed to inspire and allow users to enjoy a peaceful space where greenery and the sound of water are their companions. It includes a vertical garden with a small corner where visitors can take photos and appreciate, from above, this square that has been so well received both inside and outside the town, becoming one of its most special and unique public spaces.
It features a waterfall fountain on one side displaying the Plaza Paterna emblem, which recreates the soothing sound of water that historically characterized El Aljibe, offering a unique and relaxing atmosphere both day and night. It includes discreet LED lighting integrated into various areas alongside the planters, as well as small ground spotlights that indicate the proximity and flow of the water.
The square is fully adapted for people with reduced mobility via a tiered ramp that eases both ascent and descent. It also features a dual-height drinking fountain, making it an inclusive and accessible space for everyone.
In the past, this space fell into disuse due to deterioration and was closed to the public because of the poor condition of the cistern’s remains, eventually becoming a mere site for advertising billboards. However, with the birth of Torrenueva Costa as an independent town, one of the top priorities became reviving the historical and cultural elements that had shaped its origins.
Plaza Paterna is an example of how the restoration and conservation of cultural and natural heritage can contribute to the sustainable development of local communities. This initiative has not only allowed for the recovery of a valuable historical and cultural asset, but also for the creation of new green and leisure spaces for both residents and visitors to the area.
This space is also used to represent the town through its LED lighting on significant dates, such as World Breast Cancer Day as a gesture of awareness and visibility, World Autism Awareness Day, and Andalusia Day, among others.
