An icon of freedom
This is the most important and most recently created public space in our town. Inaugurated in October 2021 to mark the third anniversary of Torrenueva Costa as an independent town, its name pays tribute to the old and iconic Bar Margarita, which stood on this site for many years and served as a gathering point for so many torreños.
The square features LED lighting, circular benches, and a modular bench that frames the palm tree planter. In the center of the plaza stands its most important element, a monument representing the birth, creation, freedom, and future of our town: a winged victory filled with hope, designed and sculpted by José María Moreno and crafted at the Espacio de Arte Hermanos Moreno.
Bar Margarita was a highly popular establishment run by Mª Dolores Pérez Rubiño, affectionately known as Lola. She was a deeply beloved woman in the town who sold sandwiches and sweets to the children studying at the old municipal schools next to the Torre Vigía, and cooked the game brought in by local hunters.
The bar’s origins date back to the late 1950s, when it started as a reed shack located where the medical clinic stands today. In the early 1960s, it moved to the site where the square is now located, featuring a wooden structure and a corrugated metal roof, successfully remaining in business for over 40 years.
The establishment remained closed for years until 2021, when the site was transformed into the current square. Today, it pays tribute to the iconic bar through its name and celebrates the birth of Torrenueva Costa with its central monument.
