A tribute to sailors
Plaza Antonio Cortés is located at the last stretch of the seaside promenade towards Peñón de Jolúcar, offering a picturesque location and fantastic views at any time of day.
This space has a large pedestrian area, benches and gardens, as well as a park with swings and exercise machines, perfect for both children and adults to enjoy outdoor recreational activities in the sea breeze.
It has bars and restaurants where visitors and residents can enjoy a meal or drink outdoors, taking advantage of its seafront location and green surroundings.
Its proximity to the sea and Peñón de Jolúcar adds an additional attraction to the square, offering opportunities to explore and enjoy the natural beauty of the area and its fantastic sunsets.
The square owes its name to Antonio Cortés de la Torre, a mayor from Torrenueva who took charge of the town after the Spanish Civil War and brought a new Virgin of Carmen that restored hope to its inhabitants.
It also features a large sculpture in the shape of a fishing boat that pays tribute to sailors “who know of salty breezes, dark nights, and sea winds.” This work is signed by Miguel Ruíz Jiménez, a sculptor and architect from Otura, in the province of Granada.
In the months of July and August, this square also becomes a meeting point for night markets and has become one of the preferred places to socialize and enjoy a snack on warm summer nights. In addition, next to Acera del Mar, there is a battery recycling point and a small drinking water fountain for those who need to hydrate.
In short, Plaza Antonio Cortés is a space for coexistence, a meeting place for all people who wish to enjoy the outdoors with the calm of the sea breeze.
