THE PIER

Our gateway to the sea

The pier in Torrenueva Costa serves as a space for gathering, contemplation, and collective memory, deeply connected to the town’s maritime tradition. Located in a privileged place facing the Mediterranean Sea, it offers both residents and visitors a prominent vantage point from which to appreciate the vastness of the coastal landscape and the historic relationship between the town and the marine environment.

This space holds significant symbolic value thanks to the sculpture that presides over it, a piece by the artist Luis Villaescusa González, a native of Salobreña. The artwork depicts a woman waiting for the arrival of the boats, evoking values such as hope, protection, and sacrifice, which are deeply rooted in fishing communities. Furthermore, the monument features the names of the vessels that have formed the fishing fleet of Torrenueva Costa, serving as a permanent tribute to the generations who have built their lives around the sea.

The complex was inaugurated in October 2024, incorporating a decked platform, a rest area, and open spaces oriented toward the contemplation of the coastal environment. The project, designed by architects Jorge Salguero and Armando Palomares, fulfills criteria of landscape integration, functionality, and public use, consolidating this enclave as a new landmark within the urban fabric.

Adjacent to this space, an old boat winch has been preserved, a traditional tool used for beaching, maintenance, and launching boats. Deeply linked to local fishing activity, this tool constitutes a relevant testament to the municipality’s ethnographic heritage, reinforcing the historical and cultural character of the site.

Today, the pier stands as a dynamic space for community life and activity, promoting citizen use as well as the development of initiatives linked to active tourism.
