Bathed by the Mediterranean and embraced by a mountain that reaches out to touch the sea with beautiful cliffs full of life, our municipality has become known for the first suspension footbridge over the sea on the Spanish Mediterranean coast: the Jolúcar Suspension Footbridge.
This project was designed by the architect Jorge Suso Fernández-Fígares, Head of the Architecture Department of the Provincial Council of Granada, in a process that lasted four years from its initial presentation on paper to its long-awaited opening to the public in May 2022.
A panoramic window onto the vastness of the Alboran Sea, the footbridge rises 35 metres above sea level and stretches 60 metres across Iroko wood planks, featuring a glazed central section that allows visitors to experience a wide range of emotions as they walk across it. At sunset, the rocky slopes are illuminated with warm spotlights that highlight the height of the structure, together with LED light strips running from one end of the walkway to the other.
This footbridge is part of the PR-A 420 “Miradores y Acantilados de Torrenueva Costa” trail, our coastal walking route. It is a journey where the sea, cliffs, nature, and the rich life supported by the tropical climate come together to offer one of the most idyllic walks on the Granada coastline. The route ranges from the desire to discover untouched beaches to the calm experience of overlooking the entire Motril plain, the port, and the vastness of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Jolúcar Suspension Footbridge bridges our past as a small coastal community with our journey toward change; a look toward the future through the new connections that bind us and allow us to move forward in history. A clear example of this is the twinning established in 2023 with the El Saltillo footbridge in Canillas de Aceituno, in the province of Málaga, an agreement aimed at promoting tourism in both municipalities and their hiking trails thanks to their suspension footbridges.
Today, it is a landmark location where artists of all kinds, from singers to magicians on the national scene, have walked across this structure to film music videos, promotional videos, and photo shoots. It is a stage for creativity and a place to clear the mind.
